Next week on Friday 4th of July, I'll Be off to the US for a trip.

Where? well, that's an excellent question... If you have any tips, I'd love to hear.
I'll start in San Francisco to see the 4th of July Fireworks perhaps near the Golden Gate, any suggestions?
Then around SF for two more days and down south on Route 1 to Monterey and Carmel and from there - Yosemite for 3 days :aww:
After Yosemite, it's lake Tahoe, Grand Teton National park and of course the king - Yellowstone for 4 days :faint:
From Yellowstone we'll cross the border to Canada's Calgary and the Canadian Rockies at Banff and Jasper (5 days)
From there we'll do Vancouver and Vancouver Island and the flight back is from Seattle.

I do hope it will be an excellent trip with lots of photo opportunities. Three and a half weeks of travel and photography.

If you have any suggestions of special places to go or places to sleep, of course I'll appreciate it

Check out my gallery !

I have a bunch of photos from the Vancouver area - one of my fog shots is from a ferry crossing from Victoria to Vancouver.

Chinatown, Granville, Rockies, Lion's Gate, White Rock

There is a great fish and chips restaurant in White Rocks. When I remember the name I'll let you know.

Have a great trip !!! Can't wait to see the photos. :)

One of my favorite trips is hiking up to delicate arch near Moab Utah. It is a great bare foot hike for the top half of the trail. Really, It is, and you don't need tough feet either. Also the view is great. There are also lots of places you can snap shot on the way to the Arches National park too, and you can hike to other arches. At this time of year though it is probably too hot, but you can plan for later in the season if you wanted to.

yes, i do. we have gorgeous mountains and forests of pine trees, almost desert like environment, and a massive lake right in the heart of the valley. in most places the forest comes right up to the edges of the lake. many many wineries and vinyards, and 13 very old train trestles over-looking a steep canyon

You skip right over Oregon, you can't do that. Seattle is only a few hours north from Oregon, you could bus or fly down.

If you can make it to Oregon I would suggest seeing Multnomah Falls in the Columbia River Gorge. It is the nations second tallest waterfall at 620 feet. And then you must spend a night in Portland to visit Mt. Tabor, our very own extinct volcano and view downtown Portland at night.

Yay, you're coming to Vancouver where I live! :)

If you want to check out some parks while you're here: Stanley Park is the famous one, but Lighthouse Park is just beautiful (walk down to the water when you are there). Also stop at Granville Island for a few hours! It's a shopping location and near the downtown.

Have a WONDERFUL trip! I hope the weather is fine for you. :)

Is it worth going to Vancouver Island? Is there a good whale watching tour? any good wildlife locations you're aware of?

thanks

Definitely go to Vancouver Island! It's absolutely beautiful there. I don't know about the whale watching tours, but I'm sure you can find a good one!

Victoria is lovely, and worth checking out. It feels like an old English town, and the architecture is very nice. There is also lots of good hiking and sightseeing near Nanaimo which is further north!

Whoo, sounds like a fun trip! While you're in Calgary you might want to check out the Stampede. I don't know if you'll be there for it (from the 4th to the 13th), but it's the one thing Calgarians really get excited about. I'm not a big fan myself, but to each his/her own.

I'm thinking more of just passing through on the way to Banff and Jasper :)
perhaps you would know... should I make reservations for the hostels in Banff and Jasper or should I just arrive and hope there will be vacancy?
Reply

I'd suggest reservations. They're huuuge tourist attractions in summer and winter, so it'll be busy. But it also depends on the size of the hotel. If you're planning to stay in something like the Banff Springs, reservations are a must. After that, I'm not entirely sure, but I would play it better safe than sorry.
